Ooty is one of the most exciting hill stations in the South. One of the most enjoyable attractions of Ooty is the ride on The Nilgiri Mountain Railway or ‘the Nilgiri Toy Train’ connecting Mettupalayam to Ooty. The ride in the slow train takes you from uphill Ooty to a picturesque beautiful town at foothills, Mettupalayam. In service since 1899, this joy ride has thrilled tourists with a view of the beautiful sceneries of Ooty. At a speed of 33 km per hour, the ride covers a distance of 46 km. The journey up on the steep mountains is a pure delight to all the tourists from any part of the world.
The Journey
Total distance covered by Nilgiri Mountain Railway is approximately 26 41.8 km. The train travels through various tunnels, curves and bridges, before it reaches the final destination. The train is well known for bearing the steepest track in Asia.
- Mettupalayam Station
After boarding Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the train leaves Mettupalayam and before it passes Bhavani River, the train sinks down. After that, it steadily rises up.
- Kallar Station
The rack rail starts from here. The station is closed for passengers.
- Adderly Station
The station is closed for passengers. Train stops for water requirements.
- Hillgrove Station
This is a block post and the train stops for water and refreshment requirements
- Runneymede Station

- Kateri Road Station

- Coonoor Station
This is the primary midway station during journey. Trains move back a little before continuing the climb uphill to Ooty.
